Welcome everyone to the IMA Gulf South Council website. We are a council that is proud of our heritage and history of being a supporter of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) agenda here in the southeast. I encourage all members to get involved in their local chapters as well as their related council as it provides an even greater exposure to education and networking of its members.
As you know, IMA Global has been advertising the fact that this is the 100 year anniversary of the Institute of Management Accountants. That has caused me to ponder my own career that has grown within the IMA. I distinctly remember sitting for the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) exam back in 1985 and passing that exam. I am grateful to my mentors at the time for pushing me to become certified. My decision for the IMA was made due to my love for the private industry aspects of being an accountant. While the CPA certification is good for it’s purposes, to become a stronger professional in private industry was the goal. This made sense to me that the CMA certification and its related knowledge would suit my career choice much better.
Over the years my career has placed me in various roles such as Internal Auditor - Accounting Manager - Controller - Chief Financial Officer. Although we will never know if the IMA helped me progress as I have, I believe it has. One thing I do know is that I have never shied away from pursuing any position even though it stated “CPA Required”. Those words only made me want it more and I have defended my certification every step of the way in my career.
Enough about me......
This year will start out with our Fall Program being held in Chattanooga, TN. Our Board has put together a fantastic agenda for the two day conference that will give you 12 hours of continuing education. Our brochure is currently being advertised on the website so check it out and make your plans to attend the Fall Program. Our Spring Program is scheduled to be held in Huntsville, AL in April, 2019. While we have not set that agenda yet, it will be great to be in the city known as “The Star of Alabama” and I look forward to seeing every one of you there. Go ahead and footnote this meeting on your calendar and wait for the details to follow.
Our most recent meeting was held in Atlanta, GA with Mr. Excel himself - Bill Jelen. After that meeting, Mr. Excel penned an article in Strategic Finance and mentioned our meeting. He highlighted an area that one of our Attendees presented - Jack Whipple. I will have a copy of the article for everyone in attendance at our upcoming meeting for you to review and maybe implement in your daily tasks.
Remember to invite everyone you know to our program coming up September 27th & 28th, 2018 - even your neighbor. You never know, they may attend and learn some valuable lessons. Also, if I can be of assistance to your local chapter, let me know as I would be honored to attend one of your meetings this chapter year.
